Glass colour and redox interactions

J M Parker* & T Volotinen

This paper will consider the interactions between pairs of redox ions in glass. Quantitative analysis using optical spectroscopy allows the determination of the proportions of ions in different oxidation states. These proportions have been studied for ion pairs such as Fe/Ce in silicate glasses as a function of the concentration of the dopant ions. Simple models will be derived to explain the observed behaviour and these results will be related to the calculation of colour coordinates in commercial glass compositions.
